Our 2018 visit to Royal Porthcawl started with the Horne’s drinks party at their home in Laleston on a pleasant summers evening. We spent a very delightful hour or so with members of Porthcawl and their wives before gathering at the Rose and Crown for our opening dinner.
The Captain and the Immediate Past Captain, Stephen Moore, (standing in for the President who was at a family wedding) chose the sides for Saturday’s foursomes. A very important event as the losers would be footing the bill for the port at Saturdays dinner.
Saturday saw some splendid golf played but with many stories of time spent in the fearsome rough to be found just off the edge of the fairways. Victory went to the IPC’s team by a mere half a point that was decided by the last match on the final hole – very tight indeed. The weather was windy but for the most part dry.
Dinner was taken at the Club on Saturday evening where the Captain of RPGC was our guest. David Horne announced the teams for the match on Sunday with his usual well chosen words of encouragement for the Hazards side.
Sunday dawned overcast and windy and by the time we teed off rain had started to fall and became quite heavy for the first hour or so. The result was, unfortunately, a win for the home side but by a lesser margin that in previous years.
Duncan Bateman presented the Trophy to the Club Captain at lunch thanking him and all at the club for the wonderful hospitality and warm welcome received.
