Suffolk Tour 2018

Our touring party for 2018 was Jeremy McIlroy, Captain – Duncan Bateman, Tour organiser – Stephen Chappell, David Downes, Peter Dyson, Treasurer – Mike Roden, Chris Sneath- President and Andrew Rodgers in the back row.  Seated are The Aldeburgh Captain – Desmond Reeves, Mick Donnelly, Bruce Bevan-Jones, Liz Sneath, Hugh Smith and Graham Sutton.

We met at Aldeburgh Golf Club on the 20th August for lunch and a briefing by the Secretary.  Then into a light lunch prior to our foursomes match against the club.  Despite some solid play by the Hazards we went down by 4.5 points to 3.5 points. It was a tight affair as the result was unclear until the last group came in.  The party returned to the club in the evening for a splendid dinner and some sparkling speeches by Desmond Reeves from Aldeburgh and our Captain Duncan Bateman.  We returned to the hotel for a nightcap before retiring to bed.

Tuesday saw the Captains team take on the President’s select side  over twenty seven holes on the Thorpeness course.   It was a fun day in sunny conditions that resulted in the President’s side taking a one point lead into the second day.  We were kindly invited for drinks by Chris Sneath at his house in a nearby village – once again the Secretary gave out all the maps and went on memory – needless to say he arrived just in time to have the above picture taken before returning to the hotel for dinner.

Wednesday took us an hour south to Felixstowe Ferry Golf Course.  A good seaside links with views of the estuary and south towards the container port of Felixstowe.  The two teams played their way round this intricate course finishing with the Captain’s team conquerors by one point thereby halving the two day match between these fierce rivals.

Our final sit down was over a plate of the Felixstowe ‘Famous Fish & Chips’ before departing to our homes and loved ones.  The Captain said a few words to thank all who attended and on their behalf thanked the organiser for his stirling efforts in making the Suffolk Tour so enjoyable.
