Our annual tour to East Anglia proved as popular as ever with a dozen members heading up the A12 to Aldeburgh. Those present were
Hugh Smith, Chris Sneath, Peter Dyson, Duncan Bateman, David Downes, Stephen Moore, Rhodri Thomas, Andy Pollock, Graham Sutton, Tim Cracklen, Bruce Bevan-Jones and myself.
Despite the heavy rain thrown us at Aldeburgh we managed to win the match by 4 points to 2. A very satisfactory result after last years loss. The team returned to the club later in the evening for a convivial dinner with our opposition and their wives.
Day two was an early start to get down to Woodbridge for a 9.30 tee off. Sides had been selected the previous evening and consisted of Past Captains and this year’s leader, Hugh Smith against the rest. We played fourball in the morning and foursomes in the afternoon which finished with the Captains leading by a point. A most enjoyable day at a very pleasant Golf Course.
The Captain laid on a BBQ for the team in the evening where the weather replicated the very good conditions found at Woodbridge, clear sky and lights winds.
Our final day was a fourball at Thorpeness GC. The course was in excellent condition as Laura Davies and her fellow lady professionals were due to play the week after us. The final score for the match was a draw between two well-matched sides.
We bid a farewell to the sunny Suffolk coast over a beer and a sandwich and looked forward to next year’s event. Thanks were expressed to Hugh Smith and his wife Sandra for their hospitality and to Richard Blanchflower for his organisation of the event.
